Announcement about  

Sayyid Sistani's fatwa about the Prophet's (s.a.w.a.) companions

To all the respected believers,

Peace be upon you and God 's mercy and blessings,

The office of the highest religious authority for Muslims (Marja'), Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Husseini al-Sistani (may his presence be prolonged) in Najaf, issued a fatwa condemning the transgression against the Companions (of the Holy Prophet) and the Islamic figures. It should be noted that this fatwa is based on an Islamic foundation dating back to the revelation of the Qur'an on the heart of the Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.a.) and is a principle of Muslim ethic and conduct; thus it does not need a declaration or fatwa to establish. However, it seems that some Muslims are overlooking these simplest of duties and are affected by those who call to violence under the cloak of religion. As such they are in need of advice and direction more than any time before. This fatwa joins the recent efforts of the Muslim leadership in North America with the signing of the Washington Declaration and similar efforts before it, such as the Mecca Declaration (1427 AH - 2006 AD), to safeguard against sectarian divisions.

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته

إن هذه الفتوى تعبر عن مبدء إسلامي يعود تأريخه منذ نزول القرآن على قلب النبي محمد (ص)، وهو من بديهيات أخلاقيات الإنسان المسلم، وليس بحاجة الى بيان أو استفتاء وإجابة بتاتاً. وقد تصدى أخيراً قادة المسلمين في أميركا الشمالية بتوقيع وثيقة واشنطن من أجله أيضاً الى جانب وثيقة مكة (1427 - 2006) وغيرها من الجهود المماثلة، لكن يبدو أن بعض المسلمين يغفلون عن أبسط الواجبات، ويتأثرون بمن يدعو الى العنف بلباس الدين، وهم بحاجة الى النصح والإرشاد أكثر من أي وقت مضى. والسلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته
