The Office of his Eminence Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Sistani in the Holy City of Najaf, had announced the following:
In The Name of Allah The Beneficent The Merciful
The office of his eminence Sayyid Sistani (may Allah prolong his life),in the holy city of Najaf,announces to the gracious believers that the crescent moon of the month of Shawal was investigated after sunset on Saturday the 29th of the month of Ramadan.The crescent moon sighting was not proven using the naked eye to the honorable Sayyid (may Allah prolong his life) in Iraq or in the rest of the Arabic and Islamic countries. Based on this information, tomorrow Sunday, will be considered the completion of the thirty days ('etmam 'edah) of the month of Ramadan. Therefore, Monday will be the joyous day of Eid ul-Fitr. May Allah Almighty bestow upon all Muslims goodness, ease and blessings and may He accept the best of deeds. Surely, He is All-Hearing All-Answering.

Based on the announcement for the Arabic and Islamic nations, on the one hand, and the web sites which have provided the astronomical predictions of the crescent moon sighting in southern regions, such as Miami, Houston, San Diego and other adjacent cities in which if Islamically the sighting of the crescent moon is proven then the first day of Shawal will be Sunday for those regions.
As for the remaining middle and northern regions of the United States of America and Canada, Sunday will be the completion of the 30 days of the month of Ramadan (etmam 'edah). Therefore, Monday will be the first day of Shawal by the grace of Allah.
